Lots of people use the free site statistics provided by Reinvigorate to track hits and referrers. While Reinvigorate is a fantastic service, occasionally they will perform maintenance or their site will be overloaded and the service will appear down. This can cause problems on your own site if you don’t have the bit of Javascript they have given you in the right place.

If you have it too high up on your page and their site is down or slow, the rest of your page will fail to load or take an unusually long amount of time to render. You can easily remedy this and keep the Reinvigorate stats you love by placing the Javascript link at the very bottom of your page(s) right before the </body> tag. This will ensure your site is rendered the quickest regardless of how well Reinvigorate’s

We are looking for a few people that would be interested in writing articles on blogging and the blogging world a few times a month. Be it from the technical side, creative side, or anything that you find interesting in the community. If you are interested please contact us with a few lines about yourself and also a link to where we can read some of your writing. Anyone who loves blogging is encouraged to drop us a note.

Most servers these days are running CGI applications, for which MovableType is one, in suexec mode. This means the application is run as your unique username enabling you to write files (i.e “rebuild”) via the interface without having to set your directory permissions too loosely.

Why then, is MovableType configured to create folders and write files with global writability? Usually this isn’t a problem if the server is configured correctly but shouldn’t we be doing everything we can to ensure our directories are secure? I vote yes. Luckily MovableType can easily be configured to write files with stricter permissions.

Within the MovableType configuration (mt.cfg – make a backup of this file just in case you make a mistake) file there are two sections. The first is commented with a strict warning about changing the settings. Since we know what we’re doing (i.e asking MT to write with stricter permissions, see conclusion below for full result or read about file permissions), we’re going to change them. This first section looks like this:

# DBUmask 0022

# HTMLUmask 0022

# UploadUmask 0022

# DirUmask 0022

The “#” before the entries has commented these lines so they are ignored by MT. We want to remove the comment and make the four lines appear like:

DBUmask 0022

HTMLUmask 0022

UploadUmask 0022

DirUmask 0022

The next section is usually just below and is preceded by yet another warning. It looks like this:

# HTMLPerms 0777

# UploadPerms 0777

Let’s once again remove the comments and also change the default configuration:

HTMLPerms 0644

UploadPerms 0644

(Optional) While we’re here, lets also find this line and speed up our rebuild times somewhat. Near the top we see this:

# NoTempFiles 1

Let’s once again remove that comment:

NoTempFiles 1

Now save the file. In order to get the new permissions to take effect up you will have to delete all of your archives and indexes and then do a full rebuild. Of course, you could just change their permissions manually but it’s up to you. All new entries posted, files uploaded, and archives created will use the new settings by default.

Conclusion: The above changes will ensure that your files are writable by you and you alone. These changes are recommend but, as I already stated, normally not required. I’d only recommend making them if you are comfortable poking in your mt.cfg file and are interested in getting the most out of your MovableType configuration.

Below are our picks for our March 2004 Spotlight Sites. Each month we will choose two or more of our favourite blogs from our client list, link ‘em, write a small blurb about them, and post them here. While we don’t officially support the views of the sites we link we do commend their ability to put themselves out there.

This month we are thrilled to feature a photoblog. A quick glance at the archives will show what a unique collection of photos Mark Prints has assembled. From children, to flowers, to numerous people-photos, bestyearofmylife.com is a wonderfully creative site to visit.

A fairly new member of our community, Zionide is a well-written journal that comes to us from Nick in Salt Lake City. Deeply personal and honest, Zionide adds something a bit different to the mix.

That’s it for this month. Check back in a few weeks for more!

The issues with Fantastico on Phoenix have been fixed and it has, once again, been made available to customers on that server. Several new modules have also been added and the WordPress installer now supports 1.0.1. Enjoy!

Traditionally, bathrooms have been mainly white. It’s a classic design, looks clean and shows up dirt quickly enough to get cleaned up. However, white isn’t the only color for a bathroom, far from it. If you’re planning to remodel your bathroom, it’s the ideal opportunity to add a little color, and life to it.

Using color is the cheapest and most effective way of transforming a room. It doesn’t matter what room, in what kind of house, paint is cheap and very effective. Choosing those colors is what’s key here.

Despite our predilection for using color, we would suggest leaving the bath, toilet and sink white. It’s a classic color that doesn’t age. While it’s easy to paint the room another color and stain wood to match, it’s more expensive to change the bathroom because it looks dated.

When designing a color scheme for a bathroom, the place most people start is the color wheel. A color wheel visually demonstrates how different colors interact with each other and offers a range of options in combining colors in a single space. It’s a great place to start before you begin your bathroom remodel.

Brave souls who like color can go for high contrast colors to give energy and life to a room. Choose opposites to contrast each other and add real character to a space. This approach offers a lot of freedom in the colors you choose and can really make a statement. Remember, the color wheel only makes suggestions and allows you to see how colors work, it isn’t a ruleset.

Other bathroom remodeling projects stick to a monochromatic scheme. That’s fine, there is absolutely nothing wrong with white, we just want you to know there is much more to a bathroom than that. Other colors, like stone, light blue, light green or a pastel can also be monochromatic and add much needed life into the room.

Color has a major impact on how we feel in a room. Paint a room blue or green and it feels calm and cool. Paint it orange or vibrant yellow and it instantly warms up. Choosing your palette carefully can create the effect you want with relatively little outlay.

Using color influences mood too. If you want your new bathroom to be a sanctuary from a busy home, then use calm, natural colors. If you want it to give you energy first thing in the morning, paint it something more vibrant. Red and orange gives energy, stone and cream is calming.

Mixing and matching a palette to match how you want the room to make you feel is the best way to get the look you want. Remodeling a bathroom isn’t something to be taken lightly, so the more thought you put into the colors you want to use, the better the room will make you feel.

Use colors that match both your lifestyle and taste and find a combination that suits them both. Out of the millions of available colors, it might take time, but it’s certainly possible.

Essential Measuring for Your Next Kitchen Remodel Project

A kitchen remodeling project(http://www.naplesdreammaker.com/kitchens.html) is a challenging but exciting project to undertake. It also saves an awful lot of money if you have the skills and determination to see it through. The average cost of remodeling a kitchen is roughly half on the kitchen itself and half on having it fitted. Essentially, doing it yourself halves the price.

There is a tried and true saying in the building trade. Measure twice and cut once. That means check and then check your measurements in order to get it right first time. Materials cost money, so mistakes can be costly. Careful measurement will mean the difference between a remodeled kitchen and a great remodeled kitchen, so get it right first time.

Measure ceiling heights – Kitchen cabinets come in a range of sizes. Your floor to ceiling height will determine which size cabinet will work in the room.

Measure up your windows and doors – Measure the distance from each side of the window to the adjacent walls. Also from the lower sill to the floor and from the ceiling to the upper line of the window. Do the same for the doors and any other protrusions in the room.

Check for plumb (vertical level) – Not all walls are straight, especially in older homes. Making sure your kitchen walls are plumb is a basic, but important step. It’s essential that the wall is square to ensure a satisfactory alignment of the kitchen cabinets. Level walls before installing the cabinets otherwise it won’t look straight.

Checking your corners for square – A shelf or purpose-made wood square placed against each corner of the room will determine if your corners are square or not. The closer to square, the better the end result. Kitchen cabinets and work surfaces can be trimmed for minor deviations, but larger ones will need rectifying before the installation.

Check floor levels – As with walls, not all floors are level either. Use a long spirit level to determine the level of your floor. If adjustment is needed, use a floor-leveling compound prior to installation. It’s a relatively simple but time-consuming job, but one that needs to be done.

Services - Determine the dimension of any services that are sited in your kitchen. That means mains water pipes, soil pipes or electricity and gas supplies. Measure their relative distance from both elevations and detail these in your plan before starting work. Pipes in the wrong place, or missed out of a design, have ruined many a kitchen remodeling project, so get it right first time.

As you can see, there is a lot of work to be done before you even pick up a hammer. The better job of measuring you do, the better the entire kitchen remodel will be. The “proper preparation” adage is never truer than when planning large home renovations like this.

While there is plenty to do, the potential cost-saving is significant. If money is tight, it’s well worth learning the skills necessary to fit your own kitchen. It isn’t only about the money, but also with the satisfaction in a job well done.
